As we move into summer and it starts to heat up, here's your friendly reminder of the importance of staying hydrated. The National Academy of Medicine recommends about 3.7 liters/day for males and 2.7 liters/day for females. More is recommended depending on your activity and the temperature outside.

Here are a few cool things drinking water does for our body:

  • Helps to maintain homeostasis

  • Maintains the volume of fluid in our blood vessels

  • Transports all of the good nutrients out to the muscles and organs

  • Picks up waste from the tissues

And this all leads to:

  • Improved brain function, stabilize emotions, combat anxiety

  • Improved digestion

  • More energy- a lack of fluid makes your heart work harder to pump that oxygen through the body

  • Improved weight management

  • Decreased joint pain- cartilage is 80% water!

  • Improved detoxification

  • Fewer headaches- even a mild fluid loss can lead to the brain contracting away from the skull

Can you drink too much water? Yes! This can lead to electrolyte imbalances, a condition called hyponatremia. This happens particularly with physical activity that makes you sweat. This is why it's a great idea to add electrolytes to your water during and after activity, not so much before. But... Lab testing of top electrolyte salt and powders indicate toxic forever chemicals and fluoride These aren't the types of things you want in your electrolytes or water. Once forever chemicals are ingested, your body has no way of excreting them. Research is coming out regularly suggesting the harmful effects. I thinks it's probably impossible to reduce intake to zero, but we should work to reduce the risk as much as possible.
